A rock band from Oxford are going toe-to-toe with Beyoncé for a UK number one in the charts.

Ride were formed in the city in 1988 and comprises of vocalists and guitarists Andy Bell and Mark Gardener, drummer Laurence "Loz" Colbert and bassist Steve Queralt.

After a big break-up in 1996, the band largely went their own ways until reformation in 2014.

Their latest album release Interplay is now in the running to become a number one record according to the Official Charts.

The album faces stiff competition though from legendary singer Beyoncé who has recently released a country music album entitled Act II: Cowboy Carter.

She has previously topped the charts with 2003’s Dangerously In Love, 2011’s Four, 2016’s Lemonade and 2022’s Renaissance.

With an added chart-topper, Beyoncé as a solo artist would be at the same level as Canadian singer Celine Dion, American rock band Green Day and US musician Prince on five number one albums.

While a member of Destiny’s Child, with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, Beyoncé also had a number one with 2001’s Survivor.

It has already seen the release of the singles Texas Hold ‘Em and 16 Carriages and features duets with Miley Cyrus and Post Malone, as well as covers of Dolly Parton’s Jolene and The Beatles classic Blackbird.

Official Charts say it is expected that Oxford rock outfit Ride will reach their highest placement of number two with Interplay.
