A man was rescued by firefighters using a hydraulic platform after he slipped while climbing up to Oxford Castle.

A fire engine and a vehicle fitted with a cage on an hydraulic platform went to the site in New Road in the city at 6pm yesterday (April 1).

It was believed the young man had fractured his ankle while climbing Castle Mound.

He was lowered to the ground in the cage where he was treated by paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service.

There is no other information available regarding the cause or extent of his injury.

Fire crews left the scene at 7pm.

A spokesperson for Oxford Castle and Prison said: “We can confirm that emergency services were called to attend Oxford Castle and Prison at 5.30pm yesterday to reports of a guest sustaining a leg injury on the historic Castle Mound.

"The safety of our guests is always our number one priority and we will be completing a full review.

"We would like to thank the emergency services for their swift response and wish the guest the best for their recovery.”

Castle Mound is a large earthwork built by the Normans which served as the foundation for the castle’s keep and played a vital role in the castle’s defence.

The road closure at around 6.30pm yesterday led to heavy traffic in New Road and Castle Street.
