People needing to join the housing register in Oxford will now need to do so online.

Oxford City Council has transitioned the process of emailed PDF applications and evidence to a new, streamlined online format.

Previously, those interested were required to download a PDF, fill it in and send along with necessary information via email.

Now, the application can be filled out on a smartphone or digital device, simplifying the procedure with real-time guidance.

The council says the upgraded system will ensure rapid processing of each application, cutting down on extended communication during the assessment period.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to use the built-in eligibility checker before applying, allowing for an educated decision on applying for social housing.

Consequently, the old PDF application, which required would-be tenants to submit evidence to verify their applications separately, is permanently off the website.

Outstanding applications made via this route will still be processed by the council.

Applicants who have downloaded but not submitted a PDF form are urged to use the online service.

More than 3,300 households are on the register with around 1,300 new applicants annually.

To further make this process user-friendly, those finding it difficult to apply can seek help via a call to 01865 249811 or visit an advice centre.

Council tenants and occupants of associated housing societies wishing for transfers are advised to continue with the conventional paper and PDF applications, until the online system for transfers is launched in the ensuing months.
