Lucy Electric has introduced the UK's debut Ring Main Unit (RMU) that utilises synthetic air for medium voltage networks.
The EcoTec, unveiled at the Technology Day at Silverstone, will enable grid operators to minimise emissions from infrastructure operations, thereby contributing to Net Zero objectives.
EcoTec, employing a nitrogen and oxygen blend, replaces the SF6-gas used as insulation for essential electrical components.
The introduction of EcoTec anticipates an impending UK ban on SF6-gas in line with an EU restriction to be enforced in 2026.
The unit is designed for the UK market and meets the specifications of domestic network operators. The design reportedly ensures the unit fits into existing substation housing, aligning with current fixes to further reduce emissions.
The technology will be customised for international implementation in continents such as Asia, Africa and Australia, marking an exceptional UK export borne out of British research and development.
Martin Sweeney, Global Head of Product Management at Lucy Electric said: "Alongside our customers, Lucy Electric is focused on meeting net zero commitments, and EcoTec is specifically designed to reduce the emissions of UK network operators in an efficient and cost-effective way.
"We have listened extensively to customer feedback to optimise the design of our switchgear such as embedding the control unit and the smart solutions, including remote control available as standard."
