A stained glass window at a parish church has been smashed and thieves have stolen cash collections and historic vessels.

St Mary's Church on Hart Street in Henley was broken into sometime between 5.30pm on Sunday, March 17 and 7am on Monday, March 18.

The church that sits next to the River Thames said the thieves caused a "fair bit of damage" during the breaking.

A church spokesperson said: "It looks quite professional. Safes cracked, metal tested to check whether it's silver or not.

"Most of our church vessels have been taken, as well as yesterday's cash collections, and they've also done a fair bit of damage and made a lot of mess.

"If anyone noticed anything unusual around St Mary's between the hours mentioned above, please let us know.

"No-one with any legitimate business was accessing or leaving the church between those times.

"Thank God no-one came to any harm."

The church said it would remain closed until further notice.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: "If you saw anything suspicious in or around Hart Street at the time, or any suspicious people or vehicles on the days leading up to the offence, then please contact 101 quoting crime reference number 43240125424.

"The officer in charge of the case, PC Barbara Taylor, is keen to speak with you about any information you might have."
