Oxford Hockey Club hosted the final event of this year's hockey season for Oxfordshire on Sunday, March 17.

The In2 Hockey Oxfordshire Tournament, which took place in Tilsley Park, gathered youngsters aged nine to 12 from across the county for a day of competitive sport.

As many as 300 young talents representing nine clubs engaged in the day's events, which consisted of group matches, semi-finals and finals.

The tournament was organised by a team of volunteers from Oxford Hockey Club.

Finalists from this event, which marked the end of the county's hockey season, will represent Oxfordshire in the forthcoming regional finals, which are scheduled for next month.

The competition began with the under-10 girls event, where Oxford competed against Henley in the final.

Henley emerged victorious, leaving Oxford to take second place.

Thame and Wallingford took the third and fourth spots respectively.

The under-10 boys semi-final featured teams from Henley, Oxford, Wallingford and Oxford Hawks.

In the final, Oxford got the better of a strong Henley team to finish as champions.

The county championship title for the under-12 boys event saw Oxford securing their third consecutive win, as they overpowered Witney in the final.

Thame and Oxford Hawks finished in third and fourth respectively.

The under-12 girls final had spectators on tenterhooks as Oxford and Henley battled it out in an extremely close match that finished 1-1.

Oxford won in the penalty shootout, securing the county champions title, while Thame and Wallingford placed third and fourth respectively.

John Dykes, tournament director said: "Congratulations to all the participants and especially the finalists, who will go on to represent Oxfordshire in the South Central Regional tournament in April.

"Thanks, also to our willing group of volunteers who ensured this was such a well-run tournament."

Jon Darnell, director of junior hockey at Oxford Hockey Club, said: "This is such a wonderful event for kids sport and we were delighted to host all the clubs from across Oxfordshire.

"We were so pleased to see so many children playing and enjoying hockey."

Oxford Hockey Club is based at Oxford Brookes University Sports Centre in Headington and encourages competitive and social hockey for all levels.

Its senior section has eight ladies teams, eight men's teams, and two mixed teams.

The club also has teams for young people aged six to 18.
