An Oxfordshire driver has crashed into a wall after overtaking police and driving on the wrong side of the road.

The incident happened after a black Vauxhall Astra overtook an unmarked police vehicle on the incorrect side of the road on the B480 in Chiselhampton at 9.25pm on Thursday, March 7. 

Officers illuminated their blue lights to signal for the vehicle to stop, but it continued at speed into the village.

The Astra then collided with a wall in the village and the two occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital.

The driver, a man aged in his 20s, suffered serious injuries and is currently in hospital in a critical condition.

The passenger was also treated in hospital, but has since been discharged.

The family of the seriously injured man are being supported by specially trained Family Liaison Officers.

A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the collision following police contact.

Thames Valley Police has now launched an appeal for witnesses following the serious injury road traffic collision in Chiselhampton.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Darren Brown of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This Astra was travelling from Oxford towards Chiselhampton when it overtook an unmarked police vehicle.

“Shortly afterwards, the vehicle was located in the village having collided with a wall.

“I am appealing to anybody who witnessed the collision or who may have seen the Astra prior to the collision to please get in touch with Thames Valley Police.

“I’d be particularly keen for drivers in the area to check their dash-cams and contact us if it has captured anything that may assist our investigation.

“Neither of our officers were injured and there was no damage to police vehicles."
