Objectors to the re-opening of a migrant detention centre are "very relieved" that re-development plans have been withdrawn following an apparent technical mix-up.

Campsfield House on Langford Lane in Kidlington closed in 2017 after local protest but an application submitted for a changing room extension in January this year sparked fresh outrage.

The council says the plans had been put forward mistakenly by the Control And Restraint College next door who entered the address "wrongly" on their application form.

Emma Jones, spokeswoman for Asylum Welcome, which provides services to refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants, said: "We are obviously very relieved.

"The application turned out not to be Campsfield despite everyone thinking it was.

"In any case we remain vigilant in growing our campaign."

The controversial detention centre could reopen late next year to house up to 400 male detainees plus 400 staff once operational.

In October 2022 Green councillor Ian Middleton tabled a motion at Oxfordshire County Council asking the council leader to write to the Home Office and urge it to ditch its plan.

Twenty-seven councillors voted in favour while eight opposed it.

Mr Middleton said of the application withdrawal: "It did seem like an odd part of the application to be pushing forward first.

"Obviously someone has got confused."

The Kidlington South division councillor added: "This continued push for re-opening is not supported by local residents.

"The government is riding roughshod and people don't like it."

Conservative councillor Eddie Reeves said at the time that he didn't think it was for the local council to "impose itself on a national decision and dictate to the Home Office where such facilities should go".
