Police were called to an incident involving a firearm or imitation firearm in The Slade area of Oxford.
A man was seen showing a handgun or imitation handgun to members of the public outside Betfred at The Slade in Headington at around 6pm on Tuesday (March 5).
He was then seen in nearby Leiden Road and Cinnaminta Road.
The man appeared to be offering to sell the firearm and then threatening them with it.
He is described as white, aged in his 30s, around 5ft 5ins tall with short black hair.
He had a distinctive eye as it was damaged and appeared to be white around the pupil.
He was wearing a dark coloured tracksuit, and carrying a white plastic bag.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Katie Poole, of the Oxford Priority Crime Team, said: “I am appealing to anybody who may have been present in Betfred, The Slade, at around 6pm and witnessed this man either there or along Leiden Road or Cinnaminta Road to please get in touch.
“I would also appeal to anybody who may have dash-cam, doorbell or CCTV footage in and around these roads to please make contact with us."
DC Poole added: “I would like to reassure the public that this appears to be an isolated incident and officers are working to identify and locate the man."
