A town centre supermarket is set to lose its cafe leaving shoppers "disappointed", say store bosses.

The cafe in the M&S Foodhall in Didcot will serve its final drinks on March 23 after an internal review by the major retailer.

The staff at the cafe in Orchard Street have not lost their jobs and will be able to work in other roles at the store.

Shoppers have been left saddened by the decision.

One shopper said: "Really sad. I can’t believe they’re closing the cafe. I will really miss it."

Another wrote: "What a shame. It's a lovely quiet place to get a cuppa. It will be missed."

A third added: "Complete madness. It is such a great coffee shop and really well supported whenever I have been there."

An M&S spokeswoman said: “Following a review, we have informed colleagues at our Didcot store that the café will be closing on March 23.

"Whilst we understand some people will be disappointed by this news, we can reassure customers that our Didcot store will continue serving shoppers as normal and all colleagues will continue working in other roles in store.”

Last month, 40,000 staff at M&S were told they were set to benefit from a pay rise from April, as it becomes the latest retailer to announce a hike ahead of a rise in the national minimum wage.

The group said it was spending £89 million on increasing pay for UK customer assistants across its food and clothing shops from £10.90 an hour to £12 an hour from April 1.
