South Oxfordshire District Council has vowed to continue its support for Ukrainian refugees and those seeking sanctuary from persecution.

The council discussed their commitment towards individuals affected by war and displacement its first full meeting of 2024.

The discussion centred on a motion, proposed by Councillor Mike Giles, which reaffirms the council's aspiration to remain a welcoming place for all seeking refuge.

The council noted South Oxfordshire is home to around 400 Ukrainian refugees who have arrived under the Home for Ukraine, Family and the Ukraine Extension schemes.

The choice to pass the motion comes as the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine was reached February 24.

It also aims to address the problems faced by refugees whose temporary visas are due to expire in 2025, particularly difficulties with securing employment and tenancies.

Reflecting the growing concerns surrounding their resettlement, the council's resolutions include a plea to the Minister of State for Immigration to offer Ukrainian refugees a path to permanent settlement.

This reinstates the need for Ukrainians coming under the Ukraine Family Scheme, Homes for Ukraine, and Ukraine Extension scheme to extend their stay and apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

The motion was passed unanimously and council leader David Rouane thanked all the residents in South Oxfordshire who have welcomed Ukrainians into their homes.
