POLICE have warned people that there has been an increase in 'distraction thefts'. 

Distraction thefts include offenders keeping victims distracted while another offender steals their mobile phone or wallet.

Thames Valley Police are now warning people in Oxford and Bicester to be more vigilant.

The force said: "We are receiving an increase in reports of distraction thefts with a very similar MO.

"Offenders are entering cafes/restaurants and approaching people sat at tables, placing a piece of paper on it.

"They will then ask for money and may also further distract by placing a hand on the victim's arm. 

"Once they leave and take the piece of paper away victims are noticing items (usually mobile phones) have been stolen."

The force added that they believe an organised group is behind the offences which they have seen take place this weekend.

"We believe this to be an organised group with offences having taken place in both Oxford and Bicester this weekend," they said.

"We will be obtaining the CCTV footage and sharing this with the Cherwell Crime Partnership so that businesses know who to look out for and to assist us in identifying those involved.

"If you are approached in such a way please be mindful of this, keep a close hand on your property and please do not part with any money."
