A 50-year-old man who rode his moped at a police officer while under the influence of drugs has been banned from driving.

PC Liam Calvert and a colleague from the Roads Policing Unit were patrolling in Oxford on April 4 last year, when they saw Andrew Ivison, of Cherwell Drive, Marston, riding his moped very close to another vehicle and making an illegal U-turn in front of their marked police vehicle in Headley Way.

They stopped Ivison on the forecourt of the BP petrol station to carry out a roadside drugs test.

Ivison got back onto his moped and attempted to escape, riding his moped into PC Calvert, injuring him while police attempted to detain him.

He was then given a drugs test which came up positive.

PC Calvert suffered bruises to his hands, legs and abdomen. Ivison was arrested and charged on the same day.

Ivison pleaded guilty to one count each of driving a motor vehicle while unfit through drugs, failing to stop a mechanically propelled vehicle when required by a constable and assault by beating of an emergency worker at a hearing at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on February 22.

He was sentenced to a community order to complete a rehabilitation activity requirement, disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £150 in compensation to the officer.

Investigating officer Sergeant James Mathews of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “Ivison’s behaviour that day was wholly unacceptable and his actions resulted in injuries to a police officer.

“Our officers go to work every day to protect the public and uphold the law, and it is simply unacceptable for them to be assaulted in any way.

“Ivison’s behaviour has resulted in a criminal conviction, and I hope that he will reflect on his actions that day.”
