NATIONAL media outlets have been criticised by JK Rowling for referring to Oxford murderer and cat killer, Scarlet Blake, as a woman throughout the trial proceedings.

Blake was sentenced on Monday (February 26) at Oxford Crown Court to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 24 years for the murder of Jorge Martin Carreno.

A two-and-a-half-week trial heard the 26-year-old, who identifies as a transwoman, lured the 30-year-old Spanish BMW Plant worker to Parsons Pleasure before hitting him on the head with a vodka bottle, strangling him and pushing into the river on July 25, 2021.

She also received a six-month concurrent sentence for kidnapping, dissecting, mutilating and putting her neighbour's cat in a blender.

The Ministry of Justice has confirmed Blake is in a male section at prison.

Throughout the trial, Blake told the jury at the age of 12 she knew she wanted to be a girl and had started taking testosterone blockers at the age of 17.

However, the famous Harry Potter author criticised broadcaster Sky News on X, formerly Twitter, for referring to Blake as a woman during their coverage of Blake’s sentencing.

She wrote: “I’m so sick of this s***. These are #NotOurCrimes.”

The 58-year-old has frequently faced criticism for her views on transgender rights, with many X users commenting it was a ‘weird thing’ to complain about.

The author responded: “1. Crime statistics are rendered useless if violent and sexual attacks committed by men are recorded as female crimes.

“2. Activists are already clamouring for this sadistic killer to be incarcerated in a women’s prison. 3. Ideologically-driven misinformation is not journalism”.

The author first spoke out about her views in December 2019, when she spoke openly in support of researcher Maya Forstater, a visiting fellow at the Centre for Global Development, whose contract was not renewed after she made several anti-trans posts on social media.

She continued to discuss gender issues and trans rights on social media since then, even reportedly donating £70,000 to an anti-trans group's long-running battle over the legal definition of the word ‘woman’.

Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe, has since spoken against the author and her views, writing an essay for The Trevor Project in support of trans people.

He wrote: “Transgender women are women.

"Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional healthcare associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either [Rowling] or I.

“It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.”
