There have been calls for more funding to make Oxfordshire roads safer after a cyclist has been killed in a crash.

A 54-year-old cyclist, named locally as David Braim, was killed in a crash on Frieze Way in Kidlington yesterday (February 24) evening.

At around 6.40pm a silver VW Golf was travelling towards the A44 roundabout when it collided with the cyclist, police have said.

The cyclist, riding a grey Carrera mountain bike, died at the scene as a result of injuries he suffered.

Oxfordshire county councillor Damian Haywood, who represents, Iffley Fields & St Mary' responded to the news saying more funding needs to be allocated to make roads in the county safer.

He said: "Although I do not know the particulars regarding this tragic event, we can only stop them from occurring by building better and safer infrastructure for cyclists and motorists.

"This would mean complete separation on roads such as the one where the incident occurred.

"We do not have the funding required within Oxfordshire to do this.

"If we are going to make Vision Zero a realistic goal we need significant investment from central government.

"It is our aim to encourage cycling as a preferred method of transport to improve people's health and reduce emissions, but this can only be achieved if cycling is safe.

"I offer my deepest condolences to the friends and family of the person killed."

The Oxford Mail has approached the Department for Transport and Highways England for a comment.
