To mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the largest air and seaborne invasion in history, Witney Town Council is looking to uncover the stories of locals who were involved.

The Council is aiming to unearth the personal histories of people who were on the front lines, as well as the experiences of their families awaiting their return.

The community is being encouraged to contribute their own D-Day tales for the Council to use as part of their commemoration events.

Any stories, whether from those who were present at the time or handed down through generations, can be shared with the Council, who themselves will share the stories with the public though social media, digital signage, and at exhibitions.

Tower Hill Cemetery houses a Commonwealth war memorial grave of a local hero - Lance Corporal Harold Simpson.

His brigade launched from Warsash on June 5, 1944, landing the next morning on Juno Beach, as part of the D-Day invasion.

The landing craft his troop were on caught on beach obstacles and they were unable to get close to shore.

They attempted to swim and once ashore, 48 Commandos proceeded to Langrune-sur-Mer which was eventually liberated, but Lance Corporal Simpson died aged 26.

His grave is adorned with the inscription: "So he gave his beloved life.

"To the world a marine, to us the world."
