An Oxford corner shop has been slapped with a shocking food hygiene rating following a snap inspection.
GG Oriental Snack Shack on Cowley Road serves a variety of Asian food, groceries and snacks to the local community.
The small supermarket was visited by Oxford City Council’s Environmental Health team on Wednesday, January 10.
Inspectors were far from impressed with the facilities and branded the store as requiring “major improvement”, handing a damning one-out-of-five rating.
The report initially stated that GG Oriental Snack Shack’s hygienic handling of food was “generally satisfactory”.
This relates to the preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage of the food sold within the store.
The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, which includes having an appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene, was also good.
It was the business’ management of food safety where the Asian supermarket fell crucially short of expectations, with inspectors stating that “major improvement [was] necessary”.
This entails the store having a system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat.
It also covers whether there is evidence that staff know about food safety and if the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
GG Oriental Snack Shack has been approached by the Mail for comment.
