A breakfast and homework club is returning to a Wantage café for key stage two children of families typically unable to access extra-curricular activities.

The Small Steps project, run at Down to Earth Community Café in Wantage, allows youngsters access to a range of activities at no charge, often with an environmental focus.

The returning project, which first started at the café last April, will run on Saturday mornings for five consecutive weeks from Saturday, April 27.

It is open to students at the following schools: Stockham Primary, Wantage C of E, Millbrook Primary, Charlton Primary, St Nicholas C of E School and Wantage Primary Academy.

The Small Steps programme is run with the help of Vale of White Horse District Council’s Climate Action Fund, which offers grants from £250 to £5,000 (from a £100,000 funding pot) to separate projects designed to help tackle climate change.

Down to Earth owner Kate Farrington said: “It’s great to have secured funding from the district council, allowing us to run the project again. We always wanted to before the end of the current school year.

“It’s a really good time of year to bring this back as we can tailor our activities to the springtime. Children will be planting, composting, creating bug hotels, cooking, working with food waste and participating in a range of environmental activities.”

The project will be run in conjunction with Sustainable Wantage and Replenish Oxfordshire.
