The dog required medical attention from a vet as a result of the incident.

Householders are being urged to be vigilant and to not leave their pets unattended.

The exact location of the suspected theft has not been disclosed by police.

A police statement said: "Investigations are ongoing with respect to the vehicle and the occupants, but we are pleased to report the dog has subsequently been returned. However it is in need of medical assistance by a vet.

"This may be an isolated incident, but as a note of caution please take extra care with regards to the security of your dogs.

"This may include not leaving it outside unattended, keeping it on a lead in areas you are not familiar with, and potentially changing the times and routes you take with your dog walks.

"If we have any further incidents then we will update you. Thank you."

The incident was reported to Thames Valley Police on Saturday.

In response to the police statement, Chipping Norton householder Zoe Clarke said: "There are some nasty people out there."
