Emergency services are continuing to search for a person in the river at Witney after concerns were raised yesterday (February 12).

At around 12.40pm, reports of a person in the River Windrush sparked a mass emergency response.

Police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and a helicopter were called to the scene as the search took place near Windrush Leisure Centre throughout the evening.

Searches are continuing today (Tuesday, February 13) by police, alongside Lowland Search and Rescue, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue and South Central Ambulance Service.

Police, who used drones to search the river, said nobody had yet been found.

The public are being asked to help officers if they have any information which would assist the search.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police told the Oxford Mail: "At around 12.40pm yesterday (February 12) we received reports of a person in the river in Witney.

“Officers, alongside Lowland Search and Rescue, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue and South Central Ambulance Service are conducting searches.

“At this time, no-one has been found. If you have any information, please call 101.”

An eyewitness, who lives nearby, said the river had been “fast flowing” in recent days and she hoped nobody was hurt.

“If someone fell in, you’d have a job getting them out,” said the elderly woman, who asked not to be named.

“We walk up there daily and it’s been so fast flowing and muddy lately,” she told the Oxford Mail yesterday evening.

The woman described seeing a fire truck arrive in Witan Way and four firemen jumping out just after 1pm.

The leisure centre car park was temporarily closed, she added, and a helicopter was flying overhead for several hours.
