Oxford High School recently hosted a Chinese New Year celebration ahead of the Lunar New Year.

The event saw more than 200 year 7 students from Bartholomew School in Eynsham, John Mason School in Abingdon, Cheney School in Oxford and Fizharry’s High School in Abingdon join in to welcome the Year of the Dragon.

The students engaged in workshops dedicated to Chinese traditions, such as calligraphy, Tai chi and traditional Chinese knotting.

Working closely with Swire Chinese Language Foundation, Oxford High School aims for Chinese language education to be introduced in British schools.

At Oxford High, Mandarin is introduced into the curriculum from reception age.

Marina Gardiner Legge, head at Oxford High School, said: "We were delighted to welcome Swire Partnership Schools to celebrate Lunar New Year.

"This celebration allows our students to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of Chinese culture, but also reinforces the importance of embracing diversity and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

"Through initiatives like these, we strive to cultivate global citizens who are equipped with the skills and perspectives needed to thrive in today's interconnected world."

Oxford High School GDST is an Independent Girls’ School which operates within the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) network and aspires to ensure a dynamic and nurturing environment for young women's growth.

The Swire Chinese Language Foundation encourages Mandarin teaching across state primary and secondary schools in Britain, with 12 centres promoting cultural understanding and paving the way for better engagement with China.
