Five more people have been arrested in connection with violent disorder on the day of Oxford United’s clash with Reading last December ahead of the two teams meeting again at the Kassam this weekend.

This comes after 13 people were arrested on Monday, January 29 following reports of public fights in Reading town centre in Friar Street and Station Approach on the night of the game.

A total of 10 people were also arrested on the night of December 12 when the midweek fixture was taking place and remain under investigation.

And police have now confirmed a 19-year-old man from Tilehurst, Reading, a 22-year-old man from Calcot, Reading, a 22-year-old man and a 48-year-old man from Upper Arncott and a 24-year-old man from Bermondsey, South East London, have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

They have all been released on conditional bail, police confirmed on Friday afternoon.

Oxford United take on Reading tomorrow (Saturday, February 3) with police preparing dogs, drones and mounted officers to tackle any anti-social behaviour.

Thames Valley Police said it would take “a highly visible and robust policing operation” for the League One match at the Kassam.

To stop similar scenes, football spotters, mounted officers, police dogs and drones will be deployed ahead of the 12.30pm kick off.

The force has put in place a section 35 order which gives officers the power to disperse individuals and groups of people causing harassment, alarm or distress.

A section 60 order will also allow officers to require any person to remove an item which they believe the person intends to wear to conceal their identity.

This can also include seizing that item.

Both police orders will be in place in Oxford and Didcot from 8am to 8pm.

Superintendent Adrian Hall, tactical commander for the policing operation, said the force “continues to work with both football clubs”.

He said: “There will be an increased police presence in place for the Oxford versus Reading fixture tomorrow to ensure that fans coming to enjoy the game, residents and the wider public feel safe when visiting Oxford.

“Officers will be on hand to answer any questions or concerns you may have – please feel free to approach them.

“If you have any information you think could be relevant ahead of the match, please call us on 101, quoting the reference number 43230557087.”

A statement from Oxford United said: “A huge crowd will be there for this much-anticipated fixture and we ask all supporters to help us make the day as enjoyable as possible for everyone in attendance.

“A local derby always involves drama and passion but also means an increased police and stewarding presence.

“Thames Valley Police has issued a statement regarding policing for this game and the stadium will have additional security measures in place.

“The gate behind the north stand will be closed so supporters cannot move from one end of the ground to the other behind that stand.

“Visiting fans should park in the West/overflow car parks. Please note that no alcohol will be available in the away end.

“Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. Whichever team you are there to support, please do it the right way.

“Dangerous and illegal behaviour has no place in our game and Oxford United, Reading and the EFL have introduced tougher measures this season addressing fan behaviour at matches.”
