Banbury United has initiated a fan consultation on potential modifications to their logo, which has been part of the club's identity for more than three decades.

The club has requested the feedback of their supporters regarding the proposed logo changes via an online survey.

The team's current emblem has been in use since the 1990s.

Malcolm Wood, a devoted Puritan, has been instrumental in the logo's evolution and shared the transformative journey of this defining symbol.

In the 1960s, when Mr Wood started supporting the club, then known as Banbury Spencer, the crest bore the traditional sun and shield emblem of the Borough of Banbury.

Despite its historic connotations, this emblem was said to be of little use beyond print and letterheads, due to its intricate design, making it challenging to reproduce.

Consequently, when Banbury Spencer underwent a rebrand in the 1980s, changing its name to Banbury United and obtaining a more simplified programme design, a call for a new logo was made.

Following a school competition for the creation of a new programme cover in 1990, the contemporary 'Puritan Man' concept came to be, suggested by a pupil's sketch of legs kicking a ball.

Mr Wood took the rough concept, streamlined it for the programme cover, and through various tweaks, the iconic 'Puritan Man' was born.

His simple strokes transformed the "A" in "THE PURITAN" text into a Puritan hat on a minimalist, geometric figure.

The silhouette to this day remains recognisable as the Puritan man, the adopted symbol of Banbury United.

Initial versions of the logo on team shirts and advertisements bear a strong resemblance to the present design, save for minor modifications implemented as technology has advanced.

Despite these changes, the original version in blue and white has survived and can be seen on the team's away kits and various merchandise.

Mr Wood: "The original logo design cost the club nothing, and after 34 years it owes the club nothing, but has been a solid representation of the Puritans and as readily identifiable as Banbury United, as the cockerel logo is to Tottenham Hotspur, the cannon to Arsenal or the Red Devil to Manchester United."

However, as the club grows and nurtures future ambitions, it seeks to reflect its progress through a logo refresh.

The consultation aims to ensure this visual representation continues to resonate with the club's fans, while also aligning with Banbury United's forward trajectory.

The club is striving to encompass the voices of its most steadfast supporters in this transition, setting the foundation for a new era while respecting its storied past.
