Marie Curie, the UK's leading end of life charity, has appealed to Oxfordshire residents to support its annual Great Daffodil Appeal this March.

The campaign is launched with the aim to continue providing professional care and support to those with terminal illnesses.

Several studies have indicated that one in every four people in the UK does not access the end of life care they need.

The Great Daffodil Appeal was thus formed to encourage people to donate and wear the emblematic daffodil pin to help the charity offer its services to those expected to die from an illness.

With Superdrug as its headline partner, the fundraiser supports the provision of expert care and support by Marie Curie nurses and other healthcare professionals given in the comfort of the patient's home.

Reliant on public donations, Marie Curie last year was able to give direct care to more than 44,200 people across the UK.

This was possible through its nine hospices and by overnight nursing in patients' homes.

The funds also help the organisation to maintain a range of online services, including its free support line and webchat.

Marie Curie community fundraiser for Oxfordshire, Lorna McGowan said: "Whether you’re an Arthur, an Aliyah, a Zoe or a Zayn – everyone deserves expert end of life care and support.

"The Great Daffodil Appeal, now in its 38th year, is a brilliant and fun way to join in and give back to our local community here in Oxfordshire whilst also helping us provide a vital service to those in the final chapter of their lives.

"Volunteering is super simple, and our team will be on hand to support you throughout to make sure you have everything you need, including the big yellow hat, and ensure it’s the best experience possible."

Apart from providing practical assistance, the charity's digital tools also offer emotional support covering aspects including symptom management, daily care habits, financial information, and grief support.

Ms McGowan added: "By giving up your time to collect this Great Daffodil Appeal, you will be helping Marie Curie continue to provide expert end of life care and support for people with any illness they are likely to die from.

"If you’re interested, we’d love to hear from you."

Residents can also get involved by picking up a Daffodil pin at any Superdrug store, the headline partner for the 2024 Appeal.

More information and ways to donate can be found on the Marie Curie website.
