Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after an early hours assault in Banbury claimed the life of a 39-year-old man.

A 48-year-old man from Banbury, who was previously arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and a 39-year-old man from the town have been arrested.

This was following an alleged assault which took place in Cope Road in the town in the early hours of Wednesday.

Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit confirmed the death of a man this afternoon in connection with this incident.

The victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Formal identification and the post-mortem examination are yet to take place.

A Thames Valley Police statement said: "A 48-year-old man from Banbury previously arrested on suspicion of attempted murder has now been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody after police obtained a warrant of further detention today.

"Another man, aged 39 and from Banbury, has also been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody."

Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Mike Roddy of the Major Crime Unit said: “Tragically, following an incident yesterday morning, a man has died.
