An Oxford baker has donated a show-stopping five-tier cake depicting the 12 days of Christmas for the city’s homeless and vulnerable.

Julia Atkinson, owner of Happy Cakes in Summertown, presented the 70cm tall dessert to the Oxford Christmas Lunch at the King's Centre on Osney Mead.

Happy Cakes has been supplying the cake which takes pride of place at the centre of the table for around eight years.

Past creations included a full Christmas dinner in cake and a snowman kept warm by an Oxford United scarf which contained 50 eggs, 14kg of icing and 10kg of marzipan.

But this is their most ambitious Christmas cake ever.

Each tier depicts a day from the famous song and comes complete with a partridge in a pear tree at the top.

Surrounding the delicious-looking treat are figures which include seven swans and six geese, three hens in French berets, eight milkmaids, 10 leaping lords, 11 pipes and 12 drums and five gold rings all created by Ms Atkinson's assistant Dawn Robson.

It will feed more than 500 people.

Ms Atkinson said: "It took us ages to do because it's five tiers ranging from six inches to 14 inches.

"It's a rich fruit cake and the good thing about fruit cake is you can make it ahead so I made a couple at a time when we had gaps in production.

"I iced them and added marzipan over the past two months and all the figures were made by my very talented assistant Dawn.

"It was a major assembly job with dowel rods and it was a great feat to lift it into the car.

"I'm not sure of the exact weight but in the past they've apparently weighed more than two daschunds or Victoria Beckham."

At the same time in the past week the pair have also made 2,000 mini cakes to be given to nursing staff in goodie bags by Oxford Hospitals Charity.

She said: "The organisers are incredible. Sara Strong is a real dynamo and she organises the whole thing with people being bussed in. There's usually 500 to 600 people.

"I'm lucky enough that I'll be at home with my family but it's very nice to contribute something to helping people who are less fortunate than we are, particularly at Christmas time.

"I just think it is a really worthy cause."

Oxford Christmas Lunch is at The King's Centre in Oxford on Christmas Day from 12.30-4pm. To book a place and transport, or to volunteer, contact sara@oxfordchristmaslunch.org or call 07535 314716.
