Efforts to curb rising anti-social behaviour at a Wantage car park have been initiated by Vale of White Horse District Council.

Earlier this year, stories from both residents and shoppers pointed to troubling incidents at the Mill Street car park, known locally as ‘The Undercroft’.

Ranging from unwanted gatherings and littering, through to graffiti and drug activity, these issues threatened the car park’s safety and reputation.

Following an inspection, the District council, with support from Thames Valley Police and Oxford City Council, outlined measures to deter future anti-social conduct.

Wantage Neighbourhood Policing Team patrols have been increased and signage reminding people of constant monitoring have been fixed across the area.

Users are also encouraged to report any undesirable behaviour.

Efforts to optimize safety have included repairs to the broken fence panelling, restricting access to back areas and bank.

Recommendation for further improvement to maintenance and safety are in the pipeline.

A collaborative effort with Sainsbury’s is underway to enhance the deck above the council’s car park.

Cllr Helen Pighills, cabinet member for community health and wellbeing at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: "We are committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all residents and visitors in Wantage.

"We’ve now put measures in place to help prevent further issues but if you do witness anti-social behaviour around The Undercroft or elsewhere the town, please report it to the police."
