A vintage clothing store is opening soon at Oxford's Covered Market.

The shop will open at the unit previously occupied by a business selling equipment to skateboarders.

Hazel de Silva and her son Finlay Smart are now planning to open Saxon Vintage Supply on Friday, selling 1940s to 2000s vintage clothing.

They decided to open the new store selling vintage and pre-loved clothing before Christmas to take advantage of the shopping rush.

The shop front is not yet ready but staff are working inside to prepare for the opening day.

The managers said: "We are a vintage clothing store with the aim of offering a wide range of items from 1940s - early 2000s.  We strive to be Oxford's #1 store for renewable fashion."

Oxford Mail: Saxon Vintage is opening soonSaxon Vintage is the fifth new business to open at the historic market in the past few months.

Il Corno, a family-run bar and shop from Naples, opened its doors last month and local bakery, Hamblin Bread, opened the first of two market businesses earlier this month.

They join Crystal Spirit Emporium and OxUnBoxed who are also new to the market.

And two existing shops, A Woollen Cosy Life and The Woolhound, have moved to larger units within the market.

With the five new traders and internal moves, the market’s overall mix of uses offers what has been described as "the widest-ever selection of specialist artisan produce, cafés, bars, gifts, fashion, and lifestyle products".

Oxford Mail: The Covered MarketHamblin Bread is already an established bakery on Iffley Road.

This specialises in baked goods made with stone ground flour from organic wheat and rye, all grown within 50 miles of the bakery.

Hamblin Bread will open a second shop in the market, taking on three units that were recently restored by Oxford City Council in partnership with Oxford Preservation Trust. The units will house Hamblin Kiosk and Snack Bar.

The kiosk will offer a range of bread, buns, and pastries. At the moment Hamblin Bread is only trading in the market on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Oxford Mail: The Covered MarketSusan Brown, leader of the council, said earlier: "The Covered Market has been at the heart of the city for almost 250 years and I’m so pleased that it continues to inspire and attract new businesses.

“Bringing a bakery back to the market is something both locals and the council have wanted to do for a while now, so I am incredibly pleased that Hamblin Bread will join the market’s wonderful array of businesses.

“We work hard to protect the market's unique charm and history while ensuring it stays relevant and inviting for new generations and I’m excited to see the next chapter in its story.”
