A centenarian from a Bicester care home has been sharing memories of her past Christmases.

Part of Ideal Carehomes’ ‘Merry Memories’ campaign, Una Hopkin from Launton Grange care home is reminiscing about family traditions and pastime Christmas celebrations.

As a child, Ms Hopkin spent the special occasion at her grandmother's house.

She said: "We used to stand around the piano singing Christmas carols, all taking turns to play.

"Christmas was the only time our whole family got together."

One memory she shared was opening gifts at the end of the day following the customary festive dinner.

"My father was always given a turkey from work for us to have for dinner and we’d open our gifts from family in the evening, along with a stocking Santa left at the end of our beds."

Looking back at the gifts she has received Ms Hopkin said: "The most memorable gift I ever received was a scooter.

"I was never allowed a bicycle, but this was the next best thing."

Keeping her grandmother's tradition alive, Ms Hopkin ensured her family celebrated Christmas together.

She said: "People spend far too much money and often forget the real meaning of Christmas, which is family.

"If I could have one Christmas wish, it would be for all families to get along."

Home manager at Launton Grange, Zoe Spillane, said: "Learning about our residents’ traditions and cherished memories helps us to give them a special Christmas.
