A winter appeal has been launched by Oxford Food Hub as demand grows from communities and charities this festive season.

The hub has seen the number of charities and groups registering for free food rise from 160 to 202 over the past two years, indicating the increasing demand for food aid in the Oxford community.

The food hub appeal is aimed at providing sustainable aid, by not only tackling food waste and related carbon emissions but also helping to alleviate food poverty.

Oxford Food Hub's chief executive, Emily Smith, said: “I thank our incredible team of volunteers at the Oxford Food Hub, who collect, sort, and deliver surplus food, six days a week, all year round. Unfortunately, we cannot rely on their generosity alone, and the overhead costs associated with running our vital support service have increased.

“We have launched our winter appeal to encourage our generous community to donate whatever they are able this Christmas to keep our vans on the road and help us get surplus food to where it is most needed across Oxfordshire. You can donate now at www.oxfordfoodhub.org/donate.

She added: “Oxford Food Hub are also accepting donations of food to distribute. Whether you are an individual, a business owner, or a charity, if you have any surplus supplies or long-life food to donate please get in touch with us at admin@oxfordfoodhub.org or on 01865 236420, and give your grub to the Hub."
