Oxford’s Christmas Light Festival returns to the city tonight for a weekend of festive activities.

The annual event is a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar and will begin tonight (November 17) with exhibitions, workshops, light parades, installations, music, craft, food and festivity filling the streets until Sunday (November 19).

Highlights over the weekend will see a giant son et lumiere projection at the Radcliffe Humanities Building, Victorian Christmas markets and numerous light trails throughout the city.

Islamic art held at the History of Science Museum as well as an illuminating cultural identity and communication event at the Bodleian Libraries.

Diwali celebrations will be held at OVADA and generational stories will be told at Barton Neighbourhood Centre with Dancin’ Oxford and Barton Community Association.

Lantern parades will go through Rose Hill, West Oxford, Florence Park and Cutteslowe as Film Oxford, Fusion Arts, WOPA, OVADA and The North Wall Arts Centre have been working with local artists in lantern-making workshops for schools, and community groups.

Festival coordinator, Karen Starr said: “The Oxford’s Christmas Light Festival is a unique event that brings local communities together.

"There is no limit to the imagination and creativity that each year makes this festival so exciting and a joy to be part of.”

Cabinet member for inclusive communities and culture, councillor Jemima Hunt said: “Oxford's Christmas Light Festival is an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate the magic of the festive period.

"Light festivals have a special place in our shared histories.

"Around the world, lanterns and candles are used as a celebration of life.

"I am delighted to see so many wonderful events taking place this year across the city and congratulate all those involved. I look forward to seeing you there.”

Culture and community development manager, Paula Redway said: "This year's Christmas Light Festival is one of the most diverse and exciting programmes to date, with more partners and community involvement than ever before."

Oxford’s new family law firm, K J Smith Solicitors has recently been named as a sponsor of the 2023 festival.

K J Smith Solicitors set up its first office in Henley-on-Thames in 2009.

With premises throughout the Thames Valley and the Home Counties, the firm has recently opened an Oxford office in Summertown.

The firm has had a deep involvement in fundraising and community work since its foundation.

Last year more than £50,000 was committed to local charities, fundraising initiatives, and community sport.
