A motorway crash which overturned a lorry caused the road to close during the early hours of this morning.

The M40 collision occurred southbound between junction nine, Bicester, and junction 8A, Wheatley at around 3.30am.

It initially caused no significant delays but Thames Valley Police and National Highways traffic officers soon arrived on the scene and a recovery operation led to a closure of the motorway stretch.

In an update at 10.50am, National Highways said there are 30 minute delays with five miles of congestion as recovery work continues.

An earlier National Highways public post said the lorry had "come to rest on its side".

The stretch of road reopened around 9am but two lanes remain closed while "recovery and clear-up works continue at the scene".

National Highways confirmed the road had been fully cleared at around 2.30pm with all lanes reopened in the southbound carriageway.

A public post thanked motorists for their patience.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed nobody was injured or trapped in the crash.
