An Oxfordshire man has been arrested on suspicion of rape on the grounds of the Minster Lovell Hall ruins. 

A woman in her 30s was raped by one of the ruined walls in the Minster Lovell Hall grounds between 8.20pm and 10pm on Saturday (October 28).

During the incident, two or three white men, aged in their late teens to early twenties, approached the woman, causing the suspect to stop, and he spoke briefly with the men.

The woman and the suspect left the area together.

A 35-year-old man from Witney was arrested on suspicion of rape on Tuesday (October 31).

He has been released on police bail until January 24 next year.

Thames Valley Police are appealing for witnesses and are attempting to identify the men who interrupted the incident.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Charlotte Norman said: “I understand this incident may cause concern but please be reassured the suspect and victim are known to each other and there is nothing to suggest any further risk to the public.

“We are investigating it as a priority and have already made an arrest in relation to it.

“I am specifically trying to identify the two or three young males that interrupted the offender so if this was you or you know who they were, please come forward.

“Anyone with concerns should speak to a uniformed officer or contact police.”

Minster Lovell councillor Liam Walker said: “This is of course a deeply concerning incident to have taken place and I want to thank the police for their swift action in arresting the man from Witney.

"I would ask anyone with information to please help by calling the police."

The 15th-century Grade I manor house is a popular English Heritage site that sits next to the River Windrush in Minster Lovell.

It was built in the 1430s by William Lovell and was later home to Francis Lovell a close ally of King Richard III.

After several changes of hands, the hall was abandoned and eventually demolished in the 18th century, leaving the extensive remains that stand today.

Much of the site has fallen over the years but large amounts remain to this day.
