The site of a former Oxfordshire Labour Club could soon be transformed into a 10-bed HMO and church under new proposals.

A planning application to Cherwell District Council seeks to turn the Trades and Labour Club at West Bar Street in Banbury into a mixed use building.

If approved, this facility would be the site of a community church, places of worship, offices and a first-floor HMO with 10 bedrooms.

The proposal was submitted by Banbury-based Walker Graham Architects for the site which it says has been vacant since October 31, 2021.

Under the plans, each of the 10 HMO bedrooms located on the first floor contains its own ensuite and there is a single shared kitchen and dining area.

But consultee comments submitted last week state: "The kitchen is unsatisfactory in terms of layout and size, and insufficient for the intended number of occupiers in terms of the Cherwell District Council HMO Standards 2018."

Ground floor proposals include plans for a large community church and a separate place of worship as well as an also distinct office and workshop.

Plans comes after the Banbury Trades and Labour Club stopped its operation in 2021 following a drop in membership.

The applicant says that proposed development will not alter pedestrian and vehicle access, roads and rights of way.

The application, which is now under consultation, has a target decision date of December 14.
