The top 10 worst streets in Oxfordshire for on-street parking fines have now been revealed.

The Oxford Mail used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain the list from highways authority Oxfordshire County Council.

St Giles was the street with the highest number of parking fines handed out from April 2022-April 2023.

The top 10 worst streets were:

St Giles - 2,636, Mansfield Road - 1,248, Cheney Lane - 1,173, Parks Road 1,109, Broad Street - 1,100, Cowley Place - 654, High Street, Banbury - 650, Divinity Road - 602, Museum Road - 578 and Beaumont Street - 575.

St Giles was also the top street for fines in 2021/2022 with a total of 2,197.

Most parking fines cost £50, discounted to £25 if paid within 14 days.

A county council spokesman said: "If nobody breached the regulations there would be no fines.

"Any surplus is reinvested into environmental or traffic schemes or operations."

The council said last year: “Drivers who follow the rules when it comes to parking have nothing to fear from enforcement officers, who help create safer roads and make traffic flow more freely by penalising motorists who park illegally, inconsiderately, and sometimes dangerously.

“Parking offences include overstaying in pay and display bays, double parking, parking in disabled bays without a blue badge, and on yellow lines.

“They also enforce controlled parking zones, which were brought in to stop commuter parking from displacing residents’ vehicles.

"We would advise visitors to Oxford to use public transport where possible, particularly the park & ride sites, which offer plenty of parking at various locations around the outskirts of the city.”

The FOI response said the regulations were' very strict' regarding what the money could be put towards.

Parking fines in Broad Street are now just a memory after parking spaces were removed from the street.

Broad Street parking spaces raised more than £1m in parking charges in the five years leading up to pedestrianisation last year.

In October last year the parking spaces were removed by the county council and seats and planters have been positioned throughout the street.

The council wanted to deliver new access to green space throughout Oxfordshire’s urban areas, to promote wellbeing, and a greener cityscape while encouraging less reliance on cars for local trips.

The pedestrianisation scheme - which followed a previous city council 'Broad Meadow' initiative - cost £500,000.
