An Oxfordshire pub dating back to the 18th century has been handed a new low food hygiene rating.

The Greyhound Inn in  Letcombe Regis near Wantage has been given a two-out-of-five after an inspection last month.

A two-out-of-five star rating means that improvement is 'necessary' at the establishment.

The score was given after assessment on September 21, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

The pub has been named on this year's Michelin guide and has two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence.

It means that of the Vale of White Horse's 189 restaurants, cafes and canteens with ratings, 127 (67 per cent) have ratings of five and none have zero ratings.

The Food Standards Agency is in charge of inspecting and rating hospitality venues on a zero to five scale, zero is the lowest score and five is the highest.

The inspectors judged the restaurant with regard to hygienic food handling, cleanliness and the condition of facilities and management of food safety.
