On October 15th, approximately 13000 runners took to the historic streets of Oxford to take part in the annual half marathon.
Broad Street was host to the half marathon’s start line for 2023, with the entrees arriving as early as 7:30 to prepare for the set off at 9:30. As of this year, the Oxford Half Marathon was the busiest yet; more runners took part in the annual event than ever before, accompanied by a host of spectators, supporters, and live entertainment. Oxford's half marathon is quickly becoming one of England’s most popular. To celebrate the event, BBC Radio Oxford saw the runners off to a great start, alongside numerous musical acts, such as bands, DJs, choirs, and street performers maintaining the lively atmosphere on route.
The trail that the competitors ran this year traced its way through 13.1 miles of central Oxford, allowing those taking part to soak up the city’s beautifully picturesque architecture. The finish line was located on Parks Road. Fortunately, the weather was sunny yet breezy, giving the runners the ideal conditions to perform well. The route was very flat with little to no elevation- very convenient for runners who were hoping to achieve a personal best!
Winners of 2023’s Oxford Half Marathon featured Matthew Kearney, who won the men’s race with a time of 1:06:31, and Steph McCall as the women’s race winner, finishing in 1:15:34, despite it being her first-time taking part in the Oxford Half Marathon.
Over £700,000 was raised by the runners at this year’s event for numerous charities. The Half Marathon’s national charity partners included Cancer Research UK and Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity; runners also raised funds for local charities such as the Thames Valley Air Ambulance.
Ellie Booth, a spectator at the event, said: ‘it’s wonderful to see such a large show of support for the runners and charities alike. I’m really proud of everyone I know who is taking part in the race.’
The popularity of Oxford’s annual Half Marathon is only expected to grow. This year, general entry places were fully sold out. If want to experience the atmosphere for yourself and take part in the 2024 race, make sure to keep an eye out for tickets going on sale soon.
