Why visit a haunted house for Halloween when you could pop down to one of the scariest places in Oxfordshire identified by Mail readers.

Halloween is now a week away so hopefully this list will spark some inspiration for places to go on an evening out.

1. Cemetery on Spring Road in Abingdon

One individual said that they had seen a ghost in Abingdon at the cemetery on Spring Road about 15 years ago.

They continued, “I was out with a group of friends, we stopped at the entrance to the graveyard to roll a cigarette under the street light.

“We looked into the cemetery and there was a shadow figure sitting on the bench with his head in his hands.

“Could see the slats of the bench through him.

“He looked up at us and disappeared.

“Makes the hair on my arms stand up just thinking about it.”

The cemetery contains two gothic style chapels and a lodge built in 1860.

2. Oxford Castle and Prison

This one is a classic located in the city centre.

Oxford Castle served primarily as a local prison after the civil war before it was closed in 1996 and redeveloped as a hotel.

A Mail reader described the sound of ‘masonry falling and nothing there’ as well as phantom footsteps and chairs moving.

The Castle and Prison is currently operating ‘spooky tours’ and a ‘ghost fest’ among other events.

3. New Theatre Oxford

The New Theatre has been on George Street for almost 185 years and is Oxford’s main commercial theatre.

It recently showcased the ‘dark energy’ Rock Orchestra by Moonlight earlier this month.

Other than that it might be the grand antiquity of the building and its rough past, being damaged in a fire in 1892, that evoked a response from Oxford residents.

4. Blackbird Leys Windrush tower

In the civil parish of Blackbird Leys lies a 60-flat tower with 15 floors.

The Windrush Tower was build in the 1960s next to a row of terraced houses.

Some 3.8million homes had been built in Britain since 1945 but more were needed due to a rapid population increase.

Blackbird Leys received a lot of mention as one of Oxfordshire's scariest places.

Someone said: “You get such a sense of eerie atmosphere – even when it’s not Halloween!”

4. Council offices

A few people put forward this surprise nomination for reasons that are not entirely clear.

What do you think is the scariest place off the above list or is it something else entirely?
