Work has begun on installing the first new stained glass window in Oxford’s cathedral for 100 years.
The window, by artist John Reyntiens, will tell the story of St Francis of Assisi and is expected to be unveiled in the north transept at Christ Church cathedral later this year.
On Thursday, all that could be glimpsed of the new work were animals and birds frolicking among foliage.
Earlier this week, fragments of 17th century stained glass by Dutch-born window painter Abraham van Linge was removed from the medieval tracery.
The glass was placed there during the Victorian restoration of the cathedral, overseen by architect Gilbert Scott.
Much excitement here @ChCh_Oxford as we start work on installing our first new Stained Glass window in over 100 years.
