A serious crash closed part of the M4 near Oxfordshire for 12 hours overnight.

Thames Valley Police responded to reports of a "serious injury single vehicle collision" on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 13 (Chieveley, Newbury) and 14 (Hungerford) of the motorway at around 9pm on Saturday.

A spokesperson said at the time: "Please avoid the area as the road is likely to be closed for several hours while officers carry out an investigation at the scene."

Traffic heading toward this area was diverted from J14 to J13, via the A338 south, A4 east, and A34 north.

There were queues of congestion as traffic at the scene of the collision was held until around 11.30pm, when one lane of the eastbound carriageway reopened to allow the vehicles to be released.

A second lane reopened at around 3.30am.

It took all night to investigate the aftermath of the accident and carry out emergency nearside barrier repairs.

All lanes on this section of the M4 had been reopened by 9.30am on Sunday morning.

The police spokesperson added: "We thank the public for their patience while the road was closed to allow officers to carry out an investigation."
