Oxford University has been ranked the best in Europe, beating Cambridge University and 686 other institutions across the continent.
Oxford topped the inaugural QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024 while ETH Zurich in Switzerland followed in second and academic rivals Cambridge finished third.
The list compiled by global higher education experts QS Quacquarelli Symonds evaluates the global recognition, research prowess, teaching resources, internationalisation and employment outcomes of universities.

It listed 688 institutions across 42 members of the Council of Europe, including 106 universities that had never previously been ranked by QS.
The UK dominates, boasting 107 institutions, with Turkey and Germany trailing with 73 and 53 respectively.
Ben Sowter, QS vice-president, said: "The UK remains a standout, especially with Oxbridge's global prominence and influential research ties.”
