A 30-year-old man was found dead at home surrounded by a number of empty gin bottles.

Samuel Grove, of Miles Drive in Carterton, died on March 29, an inquest at Oxford Coroner’s Court heard last week.

He was found unresponsive by his mother who called for an ambulance.

Paramedics attended but they declared him dead at the scene.

His cause of death was confirmed as alcohol intoxication, alcoholic liver disease and acute pancreatitis, the inquest was told.

Assistant coroner, Joanna Coleman noted in the record of inquest: “Samuel Grove was found with a number of empty gin bottles.

“Samuel Grove had a history of alcohol abuse and had been complaining of feeling unwell in the days leading up to his death.

“His mother had last spoken to him on Monday, March 27.

“She received a missed call from him on the evening of March 28 and decided to go round to his address when she was unable to reach him by phone on the morning of March 29.”

Mr Grove was married and worked as an assistant shop assistant, the court heard.

The purpose of an inquest is to find out who the deceased was, when and where they died, the medical cause of their death and how they came by their death.
