Police have issued an update after officers were granted extra stop and search powers for a 24-hour period in Carterton.

A Section 60 order was authorised on Friday (September 8) in the town after the force learned that “violence may occur”.

Thames Valley Police said on Sunday (September 10) that no arrests were made as a result of the order and that it was lifted at 4pm on Saturday.

Inspector Matt Fishwick said on Friday: “We’ve put this section 60 order in place for a period of 24 hours from 4pm today, after we received information that violence may occur in the area.

“This order will give our officers extra stop and search powers and is designed to prevent incidents or outbreaks of violence.

“As such, there will be an increased police presence in the area. If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to approach our officers.

“If you are stopped by an officer, please do not be worried as this does not mean that you are in trouble.

“You will see more police officers in the area while the order is in place, and we expect to carry out more stop and searches than usual.

“Officers who are out and about are there to reassure you as well as using their powers under Section 60 so please do stop and speak with them about any concerns that you have.”

A section 60 is a power given by an inspector or above which allows police officers to stop and search anyone in a specific area without needing to have reasonable grounds.
