Two men in their early 50s have been found dead over the last two days in unrelated incidents in different parts of Oxfordshire.
A 52-year-old man was found dead in the River Thames in Oxford yesterday morning (Wednesday, September 6), just a day after a 51-year-old man’s body was discovered at an address in Grove, near Wantage.
Thames Valley Police confirmed the tragic incidents were not related and are treating both deaths as “unexplained, but not suspicious.”
In yesterday’s incident, police officers were called to a stretch of the Thames River between Donnington Bridge and Folly Bridge at around 8.50am to reports of a body in the water.
A man’s body was located in the water and recovered a short time later.
Detective Sergeant Lisa Jones said: “Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this incredibly difficult time.
“The man’s death is being treated as unexplained, but not suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
Although formal identification has yet to take place, the man’s next of kin have been informed and they are being offered support by officers.
While police dealt with the incident, a stretch of the river from near the Head of the River pub in St Aldate's to Donnington Bridge was closed with no access for pedestrians or boats.
Police asked members of the public to avoid the area.
At least two police officers and several vehicles responded at Donnington Bridge, and they did not depart until nearly noon.
Both the river and the footpath were reopened before 1.30pm.
The tragic incident came just a day after a man was found dead in Kennet Close, Grove, on Tuesday, September 5.
Police had received a missing person report at around 6.20pm on Monday and located the man’s body the next day following an investigation.
A police spokesperson said: “His next of kin are aware and are being supported by officers.
“The death is being investigated as an unexplained but non-suspicious and a file will be provided to the coroner in due course.”
A witness told the Oxford Mail that several police vehicles and a fire engine were in Kennet Close “all day” on Tuesday with the street "cordoned off" and "residents told to remain in their homes".
They added that residents returning home from work were "ID'd at the edge of the cordon" before they could return to their houses.
