An application to build nine houses on land in a village near Abingdon has been rejected by the district council.

The proposals sought to build the houses, with associated landscaping, on a former car park with access from Spey Road in Shippon.

When refusing the application, a spokesperson for Vale of White Horse District Council said: “The development does not accord with the distribution strategy for housing within the district.

“Shippon has limited services and facilities with few day-to-day services within walking distance.

“In the absence of good public transport options, or reasonable cycling or pedestrian distances to the nearest essential services located elsewhere, the proposed development is unsustainable and contrary to the Vale of White Horse Local Plan 2031.”

Many people within the community objected to the plans at the time.

Kevin Emsden, from Shippon, said: “This application is out of keeping with the existing houses on Spey Road.

“If it was appropriate to have houses on the proposed side of the road, surely they would have been built at the same time as the rest of the existing houses.”

Minal Vyas, who lives on Spey Road, said: “I do not support this application.

"It’s not sustainable. There will be damage to greenbelt land, problems with parking constraints and pollution.

“I also bought my property with the view from the house in mind, and construction will block that view.”
