A major road in Oxford city centre has reopened after being closed for most of the day while police investigated a stabing.

Police tape closing off St Aldates from Christchurch college to Carfax Tower has been taken down and the road is back open following its roughly nine-hour closure since 5am this morning.

Police officers as well as the forensics team were present in the city centre, following a stabbing which happened overnight in Pembroke Street near the junction with St Aldates.

Officers were flagged down in the area at just after 4am this morning (August 27) after the victim, a 27-year-old man was stabbed in his upper arm and back.

Thames Valley Police is now calling for witnesses.

The road closure caused significant disruption throughout the day, with city centre-bound buses diverted around Donnington Bridge Road.

Thames Travel shared an update this morning stating its X32 service from Didcot to Oxford would be terminating and starting from the Westgate and not Queen’s Lane, due to the incident.

Similarly, Oxford Bus Company alerted the public that it was unable to serve any stop on St Aldates or The High following the incident.

The incident is believed to have taken place outside G&D’s cafe in St Aldates.

No arrests have been made, but a knife was recovered.

Detective Sergeant Lisa Jones of Oxford CID said: “This incident occurred at around 4am and a man has suffered stab wounds.

“His condition is not life-threatening, but he is being treated in hospital.”
