A pub singled out for praise by Jeremy Clarkson has shared pictures following an extensive refurbishment.

The Bull at Charlbury has become a "pared back pub that focuses on celebrating British heritage and production", said new owners Phil Winser and James Gummer.

The duo, who are also behind The Pelican on All Saints Road in Notting Hill, were both born and bred in the Cotswolds.

Phil enjoyed his first proper pint at The Bull many years ago before he embarked on a career in New York.

James had a successful career in London but both see the pub as a very personal project.

Both want to bring things back to basics by connecting pubs to farming and the land, and by making them the centre of local communities.

Phil said: “We feel a major shift needs to happen or we will lose the pubs and the kind of farming we love.

"We might not have the whole solution, but we’re committed to trying. And having a bit of fun while we do that.”

The menu changes constantly, working directly with farms and growers including a community-supported agriculture project, Kitchen Garden People at Honeydale Farm, which will provide hyper-local leaves, fruit and vegetables.

Whole animals are butchered in house to minimise food waste.

"We have daily conversations with our farmers and growers which means our menu is constantly changing, cutting out the middleman," said James.

"While it’s warm you can enjoy dishes cooked on our BBQ and on Sundays, we'll be cooking whole animals on open fire."

The pub and 50-cover dining room also has 10 en-suite bedrooms with views of the fields which are designed in a similar way to The Pelican's using natural materials.

As with the food and drink, the rooms showcase British brands and craftsmanship.

Rooms will start from £175 per night, with room reservations available from August.
