Children and teenagers on an Oxford estate have "the best set of summer activities yet" to look forward to over the school holidays.

Rose Hill will play host to football coaching from Oxford United, skater hockey sessions, play schemes and a daily programme of events at the youth centre in the Oval.

The popular facility will be open to teenagers between 11am and 6pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from Monday, July 28, to Friday, August 22, On offer is a gym, a music studio, games consoles, pool, competitions and quizzes. Hot food will also be served between 11am and 2pm.

On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays the youth centre will also run football sessions at Rose Hill Recreation Ground between 6pm and 8pm.

Youth worker Maggie O'Sullivan said: "We are always busy in the summer and this year will be no different.

"Apart from the daily schedule we have got a trip to play football in Germany lined up at the end of August, which everyone is really looking forward to."

"Our latest figures showed we had 80-100 kids here every day last year, so it's very popular."

Oxford City Council's Summer StreetSports programme, which operates across the city, is now in its 10th year and will be offering three sessions a week at the Rose Hill sports cage.

Football coaching with Oxford United for 12 to 18-year-olds will take place between 6pm and 8pm every Monday from July 28.

Skater hockey, for eight to 18-year-olds, is on Tuesdays from 10am until 12.30pm and a bus will be laid on every Thursday between 9.30am and 1pm to take players to hockey in Risinghurst.

For younger children, Rose Hill Playgroup is running a two-week playscheme for three to five-year-olds.

Between Monday, July 21, and Friday, August 1, the programme will run from 9.30am until noon each week day at the children's centre in the Oval.

At the neighbouring Rose Hill Primary School, playschemes for five- to eight-year-olds and for eight to 13-year-olds will run between Monday, July 28, and Friday, August 22.

Rose Hill and Iffley city councillor Ed Turner said: "It is the best set of summer activities yet. There really is no reason for people to sit at home, getting bored."
