A famous Oxford University student has featured in a new national list of celebrities who are tackling injustices in society.

Actress Emma Watson, best-known for starring in the Harry Potter films, has been featured on The Mail on Sunday’s ‘Woke List 2023’.

The term 'woke’ refers to being politically aware or actively engaged with political and cultural issues, in particular those surrounding marginalised communities.

It has become a highly politicised term in recent years.

The newspaper names celebrities who ‘are most high-profile in their awakedness to perceived injustices in society - but who have also been accused of having an exaggerated fixation with such issues’.

Also featured are Gary Lineker, The Archbishop of Canterbury and Sadiq Khan.

The 33-year-old has been included for her criticism of JK Rowling’s gender views.

Her statement ‘I’m here for ALL the witches’ at the Bafta awards last year was a perceived jibe at Ms Rowling who has been widely accused of transphobia.

The Mail has also claimed that in previously expressing a preference to be labelled ‘self-partnered’ rather than ‘single’, Ms Watson coined a new woke term.

Ms Watson spent most of her childhood in Oxfordshire, attending the Dragon School and Headington School.

In September she will be returning to the city to undertake an MA in Creative Writing.

Ms Watson has already spent a year abroad in Oxford, at Worcester College, when she was studying at Brown University in the USA.
