A baby who fell into the River Thames died in hospital last night.

The baby girl, aged ten months, fell into the river at Ferry Lane, Goring, yesterday morning.

Police said she was pronounced dead after she was airlifted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford but then doctors found a faint heartbeat.

The girl was described as being in a critical condition but doctors later confirmed she had died just after midnight.

Thames Valley Police said staff at the John Radcliffe Hospital informed them that the baby died after spending several hours in a critical condition.

Emergency teams called to the scene at about 9.45am had been unable to resuscitate the girl.

The mother and another child, who were on the river bank, were also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

One man, who lives close to the scene of the incident, said the baby's buggy had been blown into the water by strong winds as it was pushed by her mother.

However, police stressed they were unable to confirm the exact circumstances of the incident but believe the child fell off a bank into the river.

The scene was cordoned off as officers, including police divers, carried out an investigation.

A man near the scene said he had got out of his boat to help and added: "I helped get the baby out of the water and on to the bank. My thoughts and prayers are with the baby and her family."

Pete West, 26, of Goring, added: "I didn't see the incident, but I heard the baby was in a buggy being pushed by the mother and it was blown into the river by strong winds.

"The mother then went into the water to rescue the child."

Another man, who witnessed the event from another boat, said: "It's been a harrowing day."

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said the baby was unconscious when crews arrived and was airlifted to hospital.
